Reporting on environmental issues: Greenhouse gas emissions, water, natural resources, and biodiversity
The second day of KPMG ESG certification focuses on key environmental topics – greenhouse gas emissions, water, natural resources, and biodiversity. You will gain a clear overview of how these areas affect ESG reporting and what obligations European standards and legislation entail.
You will understand how to approach GHG emissions calculation and reporting, how to determine reporting boundaries, and how to evaluate progress in decarbonization. At the same time, you will understand the importance of water, biodiversity, and ecosystems for business and learn practical methods for sustainable natural resource management.
In Module 3, you will gain a clear overview of how to calculate and report greenhouse gas emissions according to international standards. You will learn how to work with methodologies, set realistic goals, and monitor the results achieved.
The protection of natural resources, water, and biodiversity in Module 4 is one of the key environmental topics in ESG reporting. This module will help you understand their importance, legislative requirements, and practical procedures for managing these areas in your company. You will also gain an overview of how the ESRS E3 Water and Water Resources and ESRS E4 Biodiversity and Ecosystems standards work with them.
Module 3: How to report greenhouse gas emissions?
May 26, 2026 (8:30 a.m. – 12:00 p.m.)
We will focus primarily on:
– Fundamentals of the issue – climate change, greenhouse effect, GWP, adaptation and mitigation measures, net zero, and offsets.
– Reporting frameworks – GHG Protocol, EFRAG, ISSB, and SEC requirements.
– Determining reporting boundaries – operational, organizational, and broader territorial boundaries.
– Calculating emissions – methodology, model cases, and practical procedures for Scope 1, 2, and 3.
– Targets and monitoring – how to set realistic targets and monitor their fulfillment.
– Offsets, credits, and compensation – their significance, differences, and appropriate use.
– Assurance and verification – why independent verification of calculations and reporting is important.
After completing the training, you will know:
– how to define the boundaries for reporting emissions,
– the difference between Scope 1, 2, and 3 and what they mean in practice,
– which indicators are included in the calculation methodology,
– whether and when offsets, credits, and compensations make sense,
– the importance of assurance and verification in emissions reporting.
Module 4: Water protection, water and other natural resources. Biodiversity protection
May 26, 2026 (1:00 p.m. – 4:30 p.m.)
We will focus on:

Legislative framework and practical implications
– main obligations related to water, soil, and air protection,
– new requirements for water management and pollution reduction.
Water resources in practice
– water footprint and its importance for ESG reporting,
